72 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 10th January 1951, Sergeant Ralph Vincent Murphy, 22nd Battalion (Reg No-649), clerk from "Fintona", 36 Cameron Street, Coburg, Victoria and 6 Brook Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. CATHOLIC 2-42. 26.

Born at Coburg, Melbourne, Victoria on the 5th October 1890 to Thomas and Mary Jane Murphy nee McCoy; husband of Elsie May Murphy nee Morton (married 24.3.1924, Glebe, N.S.W., died 1960, sleeping here, unfortunately broken plaque at gravesite now unreadable), Ralph enlisted February 1915 at Melbourne, Victoria.

Wounded in action - 27.7.1916 (SW or GSW foot and right leg).

Admitted to hospital 17.9.1917 (not stated).

Granted leave from the 15.5.1919 to the 31.10.1919.
Ralph did not return home until the 6th May 1920, being discharged on the 10th August 1920.
Issued all 3 War Medals.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

Also served 2nd A.I.F. - enlisted 27.3.1942, Lambton, N.S.W., age 51, Service No-N153852, 5th Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps, duty terminated 12.4.1944.
Service record states Died after Discharge, 9th January 1951.

Mr. Murphy’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall, and would probably be inscribed on Victorian Rolls of Honour and War Memorials.

I have placed poppies at Ralph’s Commonwealth white marble headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
