Private Charles Alfred Unstead (Service No:W70769) enlisted in the ACMF on 10 May 1942 with 5th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps. He transferred to 14th Battalion VDC on 13 July 1943 and was Discharged on 15 October 1945.

Born in 1894 in Mt Egerton in Victoria, Charlie was the eldest of five children of Alfred (Alf) Unstead (b1859 at Le Fevre Peninsular, South Australia) and Jane Sallens (b1871 at Mt Egerton, Victoria). Alf and Jane married in 1893 in Mt Egerton, Victoria and by the early 1900s had settled with their family at Upper Blackwood in WA where Alf was a Farmer.

Charlie was a Farmer at Boyup Brook, WA in 1933 when he married Elinor (Nellie) Thompson (nee Cumming; b1891 in Bridgewater, Victoria) - Nellie was a Widow with three sons. Charlie and Nellie settled in Boyup Broop where Charlie was a Farmer. Nellie died in 1945 and Charlie in 1971.
