Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

70 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 19th January 1952, Private William Thomas Liddell, 54th Battalion (Reg No-3146), also known as Pluck, plasterer from Victoria Street, Adamstown, New South Wales and 16A Grey Street, Wickham, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 58. CATHOLIC 2-33. 113.

Born at Adamstown, New South Wales on the 2nd November 1893 to Edward and Mary Ann Liddell; husband of Florence Mary Liddell nee Walmsley (married 1928, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 1983, sleeping here, 31 years a widow), William enlisted September 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 7.6.1917 (GSW left foot, compound fracture).

William returned home November 1917, being discharged medically unfit (chronic gastritis) on the 11th March 1918.

Mr. Liddell’s name has been inscribed on the Adamstown Citizens' Memorial (photos, unveiled on the 17th December 1921, 233 names inscribed, 32 Fallen) and the Adamstown Municipal District Roll of Honor.

The tragic circumstances of William’s death were reported - death follows collapse.

Pluck’s headstone plaque gives us no indication of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.

Lest We Forget.
