Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Alfred was the son of Hermann and Ernestine Dohle, of Tahara, Victoria, Australia.
His brother, 2792 Pte. Edmund Dohle 38th Battalion AIF, was killed in action during the Battle of Broodseinde Ridge in Belgium on 4 October 1917, aged 32.
As their father was German, the two brothers had some difficulty in enlisting. Previous to enlisting Alfred Dohle had resided near Tahara in this district for five or six years and had followed farming pursuits. He said to be was a steady, industrious young man, and was well liked by all who knew him.
He joined the 13th Light Horse Regiment which was sent into battle at Gallipoli in September 1915. The regiment was deployed defending the trenches at Lone Pine for a couple of months before the regiment was withdrawn back to Egypt when the Allied forces were evacuated from the peninsula.
Alfred was sent to France and fell sick with ‘tonsilitis’ on 12 July 1916. His condition deteriorated over the next few weeks and he died of pneumonia in the 12th Casualty Clearing Station at Hazebrouck in France.
During 1918 the Adelaide Register reported, “The Mount Gambier Racing club has procured the honour shield ordered to commemorate the Dohle Brothers' win with Skyline, in the 1915 Winter steeplechase here. It is the custom each year for the winner of the Winter Steeplechase to present a shield, which is hung in the members room at the racecourse, but as the Dohle brothers were both killed fighting for their country in France before they could do this the club resolved to purchase one for them. Lce. Cpl. Alfred Dohle died of pneumonia in France in July 1916, while his brother, Lce. Cpl. Edmund Dohle, was killed in action on October 4, 1917. The shield is nicely designed, and bears an inscription similar to those that already adorn the walls of the members’ room. In addition, however, there is an ‘In Memoriam’ neatly inscribed on each side.”
