William was the sixth of eleven children born to Francis William Burdett (born 1835 in Northamptonshire in England ) and Emma Emeline White (born 1845 in Gloucestersire, England). Francis had immigrated with his parents and siblings, arriving in Port Adelaide, South Australia in 1847 - he travelled to the Snowy River Gold Diggings as a young man before farming in Adelaide where he married Emma in 1864. Shortly after their marriage Francis and Emma travelled by bullock cart to Mount Gambier, which is where William was born in 1874.
William was a Blacksmith in Mount Gambier when he married Elizabeth Melvin Hay (born 1876 in Mount Gambier, SA) in 1901. William and Elizabeth settled at Millicent in SA where William continued working as a Blacksmith. He enlisted in the AIF in 1916, initially with 2nd Depot A Coy as a Private (Service No: 2884). He attended the School of Farriery in England in 1917 and was appointed Shoeing Smith. William served in France and was a Private with 50 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in 1919.
William and Elizabeth continued to reside in Millicent, SA, and in his later years their son took over the Blacksmith business and William worked as a Labourer until his death in 1954. Elizabeth died in 1951
