A tragic end for a Returned Veteran of The Great War resting at Sandgate Cemetery, have I been forgotten?
94 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 27th July 1927, Corporal Henry Montgomery, 4th Australian Motor Transport Company (Reg No-1000), motor mechanic from Keen Street, Midland Junction, Western Australia and 34 Albert Street, Wickham, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 47. ANGLICAN 2-128. 9.
Born at Greta, New South Wales on the 22nd December 1879 to William Henry and Emily Montgomery nee Pepper of 72 and 1 Lawson Street, Hamilton, New South Wales; husband of Mary Elizabeth Anne Montgomery nee McMahon of 13 Elizabeth Street, Paddington, N.S.W. (married 9.4.1902, Woollahra, N.S.W., died?), Henry enlisted July 1915 with the 32nd Battalion at Perth, Western Australia.
Henry did not sustain any wounding or illness during his service, and did not returned home until February 1920, being discharged on the 29th May 1920.
Mr. Montgomery’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor (photos, unveiled on the 23th May 1918, 372 names now inscribed, reported that 430 names to be inscribed, 36 Fallen), Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name possibly inscribed on the Newcastle Yearly Club Roll of Honour.
The tragic circumstances of Henry’s death were reported, found dead in park, cause of death reported as cerebral haemorrhage.
Henry’s headstone inscription tells us of his service with the 1st A.I.F., and I have placed poppies in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King and Country.
