Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Leslie William Simmonds (Service No:T7788) enlisted in the ACMF and served with 12/50th Battalion from 13 August 1940 to 20 October 1947. In 1941 Private Simmonds was granted an Exemption from Training following a letter from his father advising the impossibility of maintaining the orchard because of a lack of labour (NAA).

Born in 1918 at Lalla in Tasmania, Leslie was the third of nine children of Leslie Charles Simmonds (b1893 at Turner's Marsh, Tasmania) and Helen (Nellie) Irene Amy Rankin (b1895 in Launceston, TAsmania). Leslie Snr (a Ploughman) and Nellie married in 1915 in Launceston, Tasmania and settled at Legane where they raised their family and Leslie worked as a Ploughman and Orchardist.

Leslie worked as a Labourer in the family orchard and in 1945 in Launceston married Hazel Doreen Blyth (b1923 in Launceston, Tasmania) - Hazel was working as a Clerk Typist. Leslie and Hazel settled at Legana where they raised their family and Leslie was a Labourer. Leslie died in 1977 and Hazel in 2000.
