Eldest of two brothers (Walter and Ted) who served in the Army WWII, Private Walter Richard Swinton (Service No:NX85811) enlisted in the AIF on 26 January 1942 with General Details Depot (GDD), and marched out to 1 Infantry Training Battalion. Private Swinton served with 2/13th Infantry Battalion in the Middle East (23 August 1942 - 4 March 1943) and in New Guinea (1 August 1943 - 10 March 1944), and was atatched to 2/13th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 28 April 1945 ('being required for employment in an essential occupation' (NAA).
Walter was born in Greta, New South Wales in 1920, eldest of six children of Walter (Dick) Swinton (b1896 in Greta, New South Wales) and Doris Mary Boyle (b1900 at Anvil Creek via Greta, New South Wales). Dick, a Coal Miner, served in WWI (Private; Service No:2463). He and Doris married in 1921 in Greta, where they settled and raised their family and Dick worked as a Miner in the New Greta and Leconsfield Collieries, and served in the ACMF in WWII (Corporal; Service No:N270163).
Walter started work in Greta in the mines as a Wheeler (hauling coal carts), and was a Pit Top Hand in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Walter was working in Maitland in 1950 when he married Evelyn Alice Elphick (nee Bradford; b1910 in Sydney, New South Wales). Walter and Evelyn settled in Maitland, where Walter was a Pit Top Hand, and then moved to Unanderra in the 1960s - Walter worked as a Labourer (Electrician's Assistant) until his death in 1984. Evelyn died in 1986.
