Roy was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1922, only child of William (Stan) Job Bushby (b1896 in Greta, Hunter Valley, New South Wales) and his first wife Effie Eileen Meldrum (b1904 in Fremantle, Western Australia). Stan served in the AIF in WWI (Private; Service No:4303), and was a Cooper in Fremantle in 1921 when he and Effie married - by 1923 they had separated, and divorced in 1927. Roy remarried in Perth in 1930 to Eliza (Lila) Turbett (b1908 in Brunswick, Western Australia), and settled in Victoria Park where he and Lila raised their family and Stan worked as a Cooper. Stan and Lila retired to Safety Bay in the late 1960s.
Roy was working in Victoria Park, Perth as a Cheese Maker/Farm Labourer in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge from the RAN in 1946, Roy was working in Perth as a Postman in 1947 when he married Muriel Smith (b1924 in Busselton, Western Australia).
