Son of James and Elizabeth CLEAT, St Leonards Road, Ayr, Scotland.   His father was a Wine and Spirit Merchant.

At the time of enlistment John was residing at Dan Rheidol, Winton, Qld.

John suffered from Enteric Fever in 1915 and was evacuated to England to hospital for 6 months.  He was told after discharge from the Hospital that his heart was slightly affected.

He married Madeleine Ethel AYRES  who was a hospital nurse in England 10 May 1916 at the Register Office, Weymouth, Dorset, England.

At the end of the War he and his wife returned to Australia 16 October 1919 and he was discharged as medically unfit 3 December 1919. There were 2 daughters born in 1917 and 1919 by this marriage.
