Private Donald Webster Smith (Service No:W54793) served in the ACMF wit 2 Battalion from 11 February 1942 to 15 October 1945. Private Smith stated in his Attestation Papers that he had previously served four years with the Militia as a Gunner attached to Howitzer Battalion (NAA).
Born in 1909 in Cottesloe in Fremantle Western Australia, Don was fourth of eight children of Percy Webster Smith (b1873 in Essex, England) and Mary Ann Lawrence Touchell (b1878 in Keilli, South Australia). Percy was living in Kalgoorlie in 1901 and working as a Fitter. In 1903 in Boulder WA he and Mary married and lived in Kalgoorlie, Boulder, Southern Cross, York, Narrogin where they raised their family and Percy worked as a Miner, Assayer, Stock and Station Agent and Timekeeper. Percy served in WWI (Private; Service No:7138) and following his Discharge, he and Mary settled in Perth in 1920. The couple separated in 1921 and divorced in 1933. Percy worked in Perth as a Land Salesman, Mortgage Broker and Traveller and remarried.
Don worked as a Carpenter and Joiner in Perth where in 1933 he married Lorna Mary Blanche Trusdale (b1912 in Boulder, WA). Don and Lorna settled in Perth and Don was Factory Foreman with HL Brisbane & Wunderlich Ltd in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Don and Lorna remained in Perth where they raised their family and Don was Factory Foreman and Carpenter. Both Don and Lorna died in 1993 - Lorna in January and Don in February.
