Charles was the youngest of two children of Charles William Ball (b1887 in Kojonup, WA) and Margaret (Maggie) Nettleton (b1895 in Jarrahdale, WA). Charles (a Groom at Swan Sawmill) and Maggie married in 1912 in Lowden WA. Charles was killed in an accident at the Swan Saw Mill in September 1913 - four months before Charles Jnr's birth. Maggie remarried in 1918 and had another five children with Patrick (Paddy) Hegney.
Charles had moved to Perth with his mother and step father by 1920 and was working as a Labourer. In 1940 he married Gladys May Meyer (b1919 in Jarrahdale, WA) in Perth WA.
Charles enlisted in the ACMF in September 1941 and was a Private (Service No:W20992) attached to 16 (WA) Battalion when he was Discharged in March 1942. Charles and Gladys lived in Perth and Yokine WA where Charles worked as a Labourer and Assistant. He died in 1991 and Gladys in 2008.
