Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Thomas Mowat was the son of George Isbister Mowat and Isabella Mowatt, of Westham, Stanthorpe, Queensland. He had been born in Scotland during 1888 but had come to Australia when he was three months of age.

His father was manager of the Fitzroy Meat Preserving Company, in Rockhampton, Queensland.

His younger brother, 62 Private William Mowat, 6th Field Ambulance AIF, enlisted 1914 and was awarded a Military Medal for bravery in rescuing four wounded men over a 40-hour period in 1917. Another younger brother, Pte. Norman Marshall Patterson Mowat also served with the 1st Australian General Hospital until returned to Australia with asthma in 1917.

Thomas arrived in France with the 41st Battalion in November 1916. He was mortally wounded on 26 March 1917. He died of gunshot wounds to his spine the next day in the 2nd Casualty Clearing Station.
