Private Henry Norman Gamble (Service No:NX11516) gave an incorrect year of birth (26 February 1918 instead of 26 February 1922 {BDM NSW 9112/1922} when he enlisted in the AIF on 28 March 1940, and was attached to 2/1 Infantry Battalion on 30 August 1940 when he embarked from Sydney for the Middle East. Private Gamble took part in the early fighting in the North African Campaign, and was WiA on 10 January 1941 - GSW to his left thigh - and placed on the Dangerously Ill List in Palestine following amputation. Private Gamble embarked for Sydney on 12 April 1941, and suffered repeated amputations as wound infection spread, resulting in amputation of his left leg. Private Gamble was attached to 2/1 Battalion at Discharge on 30 April 1943.

Henry was born in Newcastle, New South Wales in 1922, fourth of five children of James Henry Gamble (b1889 in Newcastle, New South Wales) and Alice Evelyn Holland (b1886 in Newcastle, New South Wales). James was appointed a Probationary Teacher in 1906, and was a Teacher in 1913 when he and Alice married in Sydney. James and Alice lived in Murrurundi via Newcastle, Newcastle, Nambucca Heads and Sydney, where they raised their family and James was a Teacher and Head Teacher.

Henry was working as a Despatch Clerk in Sydney when he enlisted in the Army, and following his Discharge returned to Sydney and work as a Clerk. In 1944 in Sydney, Henry married Murial Jean Bryson (b1920 in Brisbane, QLD) - Muriel was working is Sydney as a Clerk. Henry and Muriel settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Henry worked as an Accounts Clerk with the Repatriation Artificial Limb Factory. Henry died in 1963 and Muriel in 1996.
