Son of Edwin Umfreville and Frances Umfreville nee Fraser of Birmingham, England
Husband of May Louisa Umfreville nee McCulloch of The Grove, Juon Road, Tasmania. Gilbert and May married during 1904c in Tasmania.
Previously served in the Boer War with the 8th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse with the service number 361 with rank of Private and with No. 1 Troop-Hobart.
Returned to Australia on 23 November 1918 aboard HT Devon disembarking at Melbourne for onward travel to Tasmania
