Biography contributed by B Stanleu

John Noel Quist, known as Jim, was born in 1912 in Kempsey. He served in World War II with the 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion. Enlisting in 1940, he fought in Libya, Greece, and Crete. In May 1941, he was captured during the Battle of Crete and spent four years as a prisoner of war in Germany, held in camps including Stalag VII-A, VIII-B, and 357. In a letter home he wrote:

“He with others was captured at Crete on 20th of May. Their camp, he says, is very modern. The food is good and they are as happy as prisoners can expect to be. Jim speaks in high praise of the help they receive from the Red Cross.”
