Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Eldest of three brothers who served in WWII, Corporal Ronald Whitehead (Service No:W75584) served in the ACMF with 15th Battalion (WA) VDC from 5 May 1942 to 15 October 1945.

Ron was born in Subiaco, Perth, Western Australia in 1910, eldest of six children of Walter Henry Whitehead (b1879 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Edith Lillian Hitchin (b1882 in Gladstone, South Australia). In 1909 William was a Confectioner in Perth, where he and Edith married - and settled at Nanganeen via Merredin, where they raised their family and William was a Farmer. William and Edith then lived at Hines Hill and Belka (via Merredin) until Edith's death in 1940. William remarried, moving for a short time to Adelaide, South Australia with his second wife Gertrude, before returning to Western Australia in 1949.

Ron worked as a Farm Labourer at Hines Hill, and in 1937 in Merredin married Marion (Dolly) Evelyn Aitken (b1911 in Yarloop, Western Australia). Ron and Dolly settled at Hines Hill via Merredin, where they raised their family and Ron was a Farmer. Dolly died in 1985 and Ron in 1986.
