Frederick was the youngest son of Frederick and Margaret Mosel of Port Pirie.

He enlisted at Morphettville SA on 25.08.1914. On enlistment he recorded his occupation as labourer of Port Pirie SA. He had previous service with the 81st (Wakefield) Infantry Regiment for 12 months.

Mosel embarked at Adelaide on 20 October 1914 with the 10th Battalion and disembarked in Egypt in early December. After training in Egypt he landed on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Under constant strain, 45% of the men in the 10th Battalion were suffering from diarrhoea by August. Mosel was evacuated to hospital in Egypt with diarrhoea on 30 July and rejoined the battalion on Gallipoli on 28 August. By September, 10 men a day were being evacuated with diarrhoea/dysentry and Mosel was again evacuated to Egypt with diarrhoea on 28 September ending his time on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

He rejoined the battalion in Egypt on 7 January 1916 and transferred to the 50th Battalion at Serapeum on 2 April. Promoted to Lance Corporal and posted to Battalion Signallers he arrived in France on 12 June. Mosel came out unscathed from the Battle of Mouquet Farm in August and September.
