Alex was born as Alexander Marion Payne MONTGOMERY on 8th June, 1890 in Launceston, Tasmania

His parents were Alexander Barr MONTGOMERY and Lisa Alberta ALLOM

He had previously served with the Junior & Senior Cadets,& the Commonwealth Military Forces and was still serving as a Lieutenant with the 86th Infantry when he enlisted - as 2nd Lieutenant he was in command of the Machine Gun Section of the West Australian Infantry Regiment in Fremantle in 1911

He first enlisted on 18th March, 1915 as a Captain with the 28th Infantry Battalion and embarked with the 14th reinforcements on 29th June, 1915 from Fremantle, WA on the HMAT Ascanius

Alex became ill with Enteric Fever and was returned to Western Australia for 4 months 'change" -  once recovered he worked as an Officer at the 5th Military District Training Camp at Bunbury, WA

He re-embarked at Fremantle on the HMAT Militiades for England on 7th August, 1916 and re-enlisted at sea on 18th September, 1916

He was wounded in action with a gun shot wound to his abdomen on 21st September, 1917 & taken to the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station for transfer to England.  He was admitted to the 2nd London General Hospital on 7th October, 1917 and listed to return to Australia as a invalid with a rapid, irritable heart and abdominal & kidney damage

He returned to Fremantle on 18th March, 1918 and was discharged on 9th April, 1918

In 1921 he was Secretary of the Childrens Hospital in Western Australia

In 1925 he married Marjory (Madge) Constance Christina WOOD in Perth, Western Australia and they moved to Cape Town in South Africa

Alex died on 17th April, 1948 in Cape Town, South Africa - burial place unknown
