Biography contributed by Cherilyn McMeekin

Newton was the youngest son of Richard and Kate, and the sixth of their seven children. His parents had emigrated from England in the early 1900s with their eldest four children.

Two of Newton's brothers also enlisted, both serving in the 4th (WA) Volunteer Defence Corps, one as Lance Corporal and the other as Sergeant.

Newton enlisted in Aug 1940, disembarking in the Middle East in Jul 1941. He was captured at El Alamein: in his official statement, he described their position as hopeless when the battalion was attacked, and the C.O. surrendered.

He was held as a POW for about two years. Newton was on board the Italian transport ship Nino Bixio when it was torpedoed by a British submarine in the Mediterranean on 17 August 1942. The Nino Bixio was transporting Allied POWs from Libya to Italy. Newton was one of the 122 Australian POWs to survive the incident.

He died in 1981 at age 64 and was interred at Collie Cemetery, as are several family members.
