Bombardier Henry Hales Floate (Service No:1658/1668) enlisted in the AIF in Walhalla, Victoria on 16 September 1914 as a Driver attached to 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, and embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Gallipoli Peninsula on 20 October 1914 on board HMAT A9 Shropshire. Bombardier Floate was attached to 6th Australian Field Artillery Battery when he was Recommended for a Mention in Despatches on 22 September 1916. He was WiA in Belgium (GSW thigh) on 31 July 1917, and following hospitalisation in England, rejoined his Unit on the Western Front. Bombardier Floate embarked from Taranto, Italy on 8 October 1919, en route for Melbourne via Suez on board HT Port Sydney. Bombardier Floate was attached to 2nd Fiald Artillery Brigade at Discharge on 21 January 1919.
Harry was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1893, second of eleven children of William Thomas Floate (b1863 in Mt Gambier, South Australia) and Mary Ann Shone (b1869 in Mt Gambier, South Australia). William was a Miner in 1891 when he and Mary married in Warracknabeal, Victoria. They lived in Warracknabeal, Melbourne, Ballarat and Geelong where they raised their family (four children died in infancy and Bert was KiA in WWI) and William worked as a Miner, Labourer and Dealer.
Harry worked in Walhalla as a Miner prior to enlisting in the AIF and, following his Discharge, was working as a Metal Craftsman in Ballarat when, in 1922, he married Theresa (Tess) Ruth Lavinia Spark (b1900 in Ballarat, Victoria). Harry and Tess lived in Ballarat, where Harry worked as a Metal Craftsman and Manufacturer, before moving to Melbourne in the early 1930s. Harry's occupation in 1933 is given as 'Dressmaker', but by 1934 he and Tess were Manufacturers of Knitted Outwear (Tess listed as Manageress of the business). Harry died in 1962 and Tess in 1977.
