Lionel was the eldest of ten children of Henry Patrick Beeson (b1889 in Greenough, WA) and Evelyn Louisa Fickling (b1898 in Pinjarra, WA). Henry (a Labourer) and Evelyn married in 1919 in Perth WA. Henry served in WWI (Private; Service No:6287) and he and Evelyn settled at Yandanooka where Henry was a Farmer. The family had moved to Mingenew - where Henry was a Carrier - by 1938 when Henry died.

Lionel worked as a Labourer in Mingenew, and in April 1941 enlisted in the Australian Army. He was a Private (Service No:WX11656) attached to 2/16 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in July 1945. Brother Henry also served in WWII.

Returning to Mingenew WA follwoing his Discharge, Lionel worked as a Labourer before moving to Wittenoom WA where he was a Truck Driver in 1958 when he married Nancy. The couple settled in Gnowangerup WA where Lionel was a Grader Driver before moving to Katanning in 1968. Lionel worked as a Grader Driver in Katanning where he died in 1972.
