Sergeant Albert Charles Artis (Service No:VX47693) initially served in the Militia as a Private (Service No:VE445832) with 23rd/21st Battalion. He enlisted in the AIF on 20 July 1940 and was a Corporal with 2/23rd Infantry Battalion on 4 November 1940 when he embarked from Melbourne for the Middle East. Corporal Artis served in the defense of Tobruk and at Alamein and Gaza before embarking from the Middle East for Melbourne on 31 January 1943. On 2 August 1943 Sergeant Artis embarked from Cairns for Milne Bay with 2nd/23rd Infantry Battalion - the Battalion was engaged in the amphibious landing at Red Beach and in fighting around Lae, Finschafen, Sattelburg, Masankoo, Kuanko and Wasao. Sergeant Artis embarked from Fisncshafen for Brisbane on 10 February 1944 ans was attached to 2/23rd Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 13 March 1945.

Albert was born at Port Fairy, Victoria in 1918, eldest child of Alice Rosina Artis (b1899 at Port Fairy, Victoria). In 1920 at Port Fairy, Alice married Ernest Roy Fredericks (b1898 in Portland, Victoria). Alice and Ernest (a Fisherman) settled in Portland, where they raised their family and zernest was a Fisherman.

Albert was living with his Aunt Elsie Artis when he started work as a Milkman in Port Fairy, and was a Labourer in 1940 when he enlisted in the AIF. In 1945 Albert married Ruth Evelyn Barby (b1926 at Port Fairy, Victoria) - Ruth had worked as a Telephonist and Housemaid before enlisting in the WAAAF. Albert and Ruth settled in Port Fairy where they raised their family and Albert worked as a Labourer and Carpenter. Albert and Ruth divorced in the late 1950s, and Albert remained in Port Fairy where he worked as a Carpenter unitil his death in 1981.
