Ray was the youngest of eleven children of Roland Horsham (b1871 in Penguin, Tasmania) and Frances Maria Ellis (b1877 in Warwickshire, England). Frances arrived in Townsville QLD with her parents and siblings in 1884 on board the Duke of Buccleuch - the family lived in Sydney and then moved to Tasmania following Frances' mother's death. Roland (a Miner) and Frances married in 1897 in Zeehan, Tasmania where they settled and raised their family. Roland worked as a Miner and Diamond Driller.
Ray was a Carpenter in Ulverston, Tasmania in July 1940 when he enlisted in the Australian Army He was attached to 2/40th Infantry Battalion (Private; Service No:TX3720) when he was Discharged in 1941.
In 1946 Ray married Dulcie Vera Cullen (b1927 in Forth, Tasmania) in Devonport. Ray and Dulcie lived in Ulverston where Ray worked as a Carpenter before moving to Forth in the early 1960s, where Ray was a Shopkeeper. Ray died in 1981 and Dulcie later remarried. She died in 2010.
