Born at 209 Scotchmer St. North Fitzroy, son of Frederick Edgley, a shoemaker, and Caroline (née Edwards), immigrants from Bethnal Green in London.
Edward 'Eddie' was the twin brother of Alice Nellie Edgley, and he had at least 11 other siblings: Frederick, Caroline, Thomas, Rosetta, Albert, Walter, John, Lydia, Robert, Henry, and Walter George.
He was remembered by his comrades as fit and lively, "always singing rag-times".
