Died on this date – 8th June.... Private William Williams was born at Darlinghurst, Sydney, New South Wales in 1883. He married Jessie McIntosh in 1912 in the district of Maitland, NSW & they had 3 children between 1912 & 1915.
William Williams enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) at West Maitland, NSW on 21st February, 1916 as a 33 year old, married, Miner. He arrived in England on 23rd June, 1916 with 34th Infantry Battalion.
Private Williams proceeded overseas to France via Southampton on 21st November, 1916.
Private William Williams was wounded in action on 5th February, 1917. He was admitted to 10th Field Ambulance on 5th February, 1917 with gunshot wounds to Spine. He was hospitalised at Boulogne, France then invalided to England on Hospital Ship Princess Elizabeth on 12th February, 1917.
Private Williams was admitted to King George Hospital, Stamford Street, London, England on 12th February, 1917 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to spine – severe.
Private Williams’ wife, of Abermain, NSW, was given regular updates on the condition of her husband from 22nd February up until 7th June, 1917 when his condition was listed as “still seriously ill.”
Private William Williams died at 10 am on 8th June, 1917 at King George Hospital, Stamford Street, London, England from wounds received in action in France – G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to spine.
Private William Williams was buried on 12th June, 1917 in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, England where around 360 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
