Raid on Celtic Wood
‘After a demonstration made by the Battalion against enemy positions in CELTIC WOOD, east of YPRES, on the morning of 9/10/17 Pte. Toll accompanied Cpl. WILLIAMS to a shell hole in the Wood about 150 yards in front of our front line and carried in two wounded comrades to safety. This was done under very trying circumstances owing to the enemy’s heavy artillery fire and sniping. Pte. TOLL’S readiness and ability to help in this dangerous task was much admired by his officers and comrades.’ [i]
