For distinguished service during the Salamaua Lae (Papua New Guinea) campaign August-September 1943, Lieutenant Colonel Smith was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).
Colac's George Smith, who was a Bank official prior to the war, gained the award for using his splendid organisational ability in disposing Wampit Force in a mission which was highly successful and greatly facilitated the landing of paratroops at Nadzab.
