Husband of Vida Lilian Otton nee Armstrong of Stanley Street, Burwood, NSW. Herbert and Vida married during 1901c in Newtown, NSW. Father of Herbert Ernest Churchill Otton and Doris Vida Otton.

Served a five year apprenticeship with Hannam Engineering LTD. Sydney.

Commenced return to Australia on 19 October 1917 aboard HT Port Lyttleton disembarking on 16 December 1917 at Melbourne then overland to Sydney.
