Biography contributed by Lisa Hart

Born Joseph George Philpot in Eganstown, VIC in 1888, most of Joe's early life is unknown to his survivng relatives. To us, he was always known as Joseph Charles Phillips, or "Cossy".

What we do know is that he made his way to Western Australia, marrying Margaret Anne FORDHAM 14 May 1917 in Mt Barker, Margaret's hometown. They had four children-

Albert Charles Reginald (affectional known as "Reg") - 1918-1976

Joan Margaret ("Little Joan", unfortunately passed away at 6 months old) - 1921

Norman Joseph - 1922-2002

Keith - 1927-2024

Cossy was a butcher (like his father), and owned a butcher shop on Guildford Rd, Mt Lawley. His son Norman went into this family business after WW2 also.

In 1942 Cossy enlisted in WW2 in Perth, noting a false date of birth (22 Feb 1890), also mentioning he had previously served on a "hospital ship in previous war" - however I have not been able to find any record of service under either of his names. It is unknown if this was false information to hide his trail after changing his identity when he travelled from Vic to WA.

Cossy passed away in 1961, and is buried in the Phillips family plot in Karrakatta Cemetery, WA.
