Younger of two brothers (Francis and Frederick) who served in WWII, Private Frederick John Andrews (Service No:VX94337) enlisted in the AIF on 16 February 1944 with 19 Infantry Training Battalion. Marched in to 2/1 Australian Guard Regiment on 2 October 1944, Private Andrews embarked from Townsville for Lae on 19 October on board the Taroona, and in January 1945 was transferred to 4th Infantry Battalion. On 28 April 1945 Private Andrews emplaned from Madang for Jacquinot Bay, where he joined his brother with the 29th/46 Infantry Battalion. Private Andrews fractured a carpal bone 'going for a high mark .... during a game of Australian Rules Football' (NAA) organised by 29th/46th Battalion, and on 7 September 1945 emplaned from Lae for Mascot. Fred (aka Freddy) was born in Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria in 1925, youngest of four children of Frederick (Fred) Andrews Snr (b1897 in Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria). Fred Snr was a Labourer in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:4730), and in 1919 in Melbourne married Elsie May Grigg (b1895 in Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria). Fred Snr and Elsie settled in Richmond, where they raised their family and Fred Snr worked as a Labourer and Tanner.
Fred was working in Melbourne as a Labourer in 1944 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge in 1946, Fred returned to Melbourne where he worked as a Labourer and Fitter. In the early 1950s, Fred married Gloria May Carroll (nee Cunningham; b1931 in Sydney, New South Wales). Fred and Gloria lived in Sydney - where Fred worked as a Labourer - before settling in Melbourne in the 1960s. Fred worked as a Metal Polisher and Driver, and he and Gloria retired to Crib Point. Gloria died in 1990 and Fred died in 2017.
