Private Robert William Lightowler (Service Nos:V41706/VX67104) initially served in the ACMF (17 August 1940) with 37 Battalion before Discharging to the AIF on 9 December 1941. Private Lightowler was attached to 2/22 Battalion Reinforcements at Discharge on 9 April 1942. Younger brother Henry, and their father Robert, also served in WWII.
Bob was born in Durham, England in 1917 (BDM UK), eldest of three children of Robert William Lightowler (b1899 in Durham, England) and Annie Evans (b1899 in Durham, England). Robert and Annie married in 1916 in Durham, where they settled and raised their family and Robert was a Brickmaker. In 1922 Robert and Annie immigrated with their two sons, arriving in Melbourne on board the Berrima (Robert's older brothers - Richard and John - were already living in Melbourne). Robert and Annie settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Robert was a Brickworks Labourer.
Bob worked as a Labourer and Machinist in Melbourne before enlisitng in the Army. In 1942 in Toowoomba he married Betty Florence Brunner (b1924 in Toowoomba, QLD), and following his Discharge from the Army the couple settled in Melbourne where they raised their family. Robert, who worked as a Packer until retirement, died in 1981. Florence died in 2007.
