One of the three brothers (John, Ben and Laurie) who served in WWII, Sergeant Charles Henry Crane (Service No:NX82633) enlisted in the AIF on 7 January 1942 as a Private with General Details Depot (GDD) and marched out to 5 Infantry Training Battalion. Sergeant Crane served iwith 55/53 Infantry Battalion in New Guinea (2 April 1942 - 9 January 1943), and was Discharged on 4 February 1944 ('being required for employment in an essential occupation' NAA).

Ben was born in Gundagai, New South Wales in 1920, third of nine children of Charles (Harry) Henry George Crane (b1896 in Gundagai, New South Wales) and Ada Muriel Blanche Crane (b1897 in Gundagai, New South Wales). Harry and Ada married in 1916 in Gundagai, and settled at Darbalara via Gundagai where they raised their family and Harry was a Dairy Farmer. In 1947 Harry purchased 'Fairview' in the Blowering Valley, where he was a Grazier until his death the following year.

Ben worked as a Farmer/Labourer with his father at Darbalara before enlisting in the AIF in 1942. He Discharged in 1944 ('being required for employment in and essential occupation') to help his father with the family farm. In 1945 in Gundagai, Ben married Catherine (Rosie) Rose Slater (b1926 in Gundagai, New South Wales). Ben and Rosie settled at 'Fairview' in Blowering via Tumut, where they raised their family and Ben was a Farmer. In the 1960s Ben and Rosie settled in Tumut - Rosie died in 1988 and Ben in 1998.
