Sergeant Leon Sherman (Service Nos:N30114/NX115099) initially served in the ACMF (19 December 1941 - 9 August 1942) before enlisting in the AIF 'in the field' at Guildford in WA on 10 August 1942. Sergeant Sherman served in Bougainville (Torokina, Faoro Island) from 14 May 1945 to 5 February 1946, and was attached to 57/60 Battalion at Discharge on 22 March 1946.
Leon was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1915, youngest of four children of Erome (Joseph) John Sherman (b1882 in Kiev, Russia) and Sara Levin (b1888 in Kiev, Russia). Joseph (a Tailor) and Sara married in 1905 in Cape Town, South Africa, arriving in Sydney NSW in 1907 on board the Manuka. Joseph and Sara settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Joseph was a Tailor.
Leon - fluent in Yiddish, and also able to speak Polish, German and Russian - worked as a Furrier in Melbourne before moving to Bondi NSW in the mid 1930s with his older siblings, Annie and John. Leon was active in the Workers' Art Club (WAC), and in 1938 attended the Sydney New Theatre opening night to see brother John performing - he was backstage when he was put behind a spotlaight told to manage it (New Theatre History) - beginning a lifelong commitment to the Performaing Arts and membership of the Sydney New Theatre. Following his Discharge from the Army, Leon returned to Sydney, where he resumed his work as a Furrier and his involvement in Theatre - Actor, Stage Manager and Lighting Director. He met his wife Alma Jane (aka Jane) Lassman (b1913 in Sydney, NSW) when she was on Front of House Duty at the New Theatre. Jane, a Primary School Teacher, was involved with the New Theatre as an Actor, Committee Member and Teacher. Leon and Jane married in 1948 and settled in Bondi, where they raised their family and Leon was a Furrier. Jane died in 1978 and Leon in 2007.
