Lieutenant Kevin William McDermott (Service No:V56699) initially served in the ACMF as a Private attached to 59 Battalion and 15 Infantry Training Battalion from 22 April 1940 to 25 September 1942. Lieutenant McDermott served in the RANVR from 26 September 1942 to 30 May 1945 as a Cypher on board HMAS Cerberus and Lonsdale.

Born in Melbourne, Victoria in1920, Kevin was third of four children of Henry Augustus McDermott (b1882 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Myrtle Evelyn Pearce (b1888 in Melbourne, Victoria). Henry and Myrtle married in 1911 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Henry was a Department Manager.

Kevin was a Student (with the Civil Service) in 1940 when he enlisted in the ACMF, and was in the RANVR in 1944 when, in Melbourne, he married Ann Rita Purtell (b1920 in Melbourne, Victoria). Following his Discharge, Kevin and Ann settled in Melbourne - Kevin completed his studies at Melbourne University (Bachelor of Commerce in 1948) - where they raised their family and Kevin was a Public Servant until retirement. Ann died in 1994 and Kevin in 1996.
