Herb was born in Briagolong via Maffra, Victoria in 1918, fourth of seven children of William Frederick Graham (b1882 in Heyfield, Victoria) and Anne Jane Davis (b1886 in Toombon, Victoria). William (a Farmer at Briagolong) and Anne married in Melbourne in 1909, and settled in Briagolong, where they raised their family and William was a Farmer.
Prior to enlistment in the Army, Herb worked as a Farm Hand for his father at Briagolong, returning there following his Discharge. Herb worked at Briagolong as a Farmer with his father and, following William's death in 1950, Herb settled in Melbourne where he was a Railway Worker and Storeman until he retired and returned to Maffra in the mid 1980s. Herb died in 2000.
