Corporal Russel William Johnson (Service Nos:N44775/NX113288) initially served in the Cadets in Bulli, New South Wales before enlisting in the Militia on 22 August 1934, and was a Private attached to 34th Battalion on 17 September 1941 when he was called up for Full Time Duty with the ACMF. Private Johnson was attached to 54th Battalion in New Guinea, and was a Corporal 'in the field' at Port Moresby on 20 July 1942 when he enlisted in the AIF. On 2 March 1943 Corporal Johnson embarked from Port Moresby for Cairns on board the Duntroon, and was attached to 53rd Battalion at Discharge on 30 December 1943.
Russel was born in Wollongong, New South Wales in 1918, second of three children of William (Snow) James Johnson (b1892 in Wollongong, New South Wales) and Alice Maude Goldsworthy (b1896 in Sydney, New South Wales). Snow (a Miner) and Alice (a Music Teacher) married in 1915 in Sydney. The couple lived in Bulli and Wollongong before settling in Thirroul, where they raised their family and Snow was a Miner.
Russel worked in Thirroul as a Labourer and Miner, serving in the Cadets and Militia before enlisting in the ACMF in 1941. Discharged in 1943, Russell married Edna Phyllis Gorman (b1921 in Sydney, New South Wales). Russell and Edna settled in Thirroul, where they raised their family and Russell worked as a Clipper (clipping coal skips onto the hauling ropes). In the late 1950s the family moved to Sydney - according to the Electoral Roles, Russell held No Occupation until his death in 1968. Edna died in 2000.
