Harold was the eldest of four children of James Tregillis Smart (b1883 in Ararat, Victoria) and Harriet Elizabeth Paynter (b1865 in Ampitheatre, Victoria). James - a Labourer - and Harriet married in 1908 in Ararat, Victoria where they settled to raise their family. James served in WWI as a Private (Service No:6353).

Harold was a Labourer in Stawell, Victoria when he married Vera Cornwell (b1911 in Ararat, Victoria) in 1932. Harold and Vera settled in Ararat and in August 1940 Harold enlisted with the ACMF (Private; Service No:V58207). In May 1942 he enlisted in the RAAF (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:56560) and was attached to 1 Wireless and Gunnery School when he was Discharged in June 1945. Vera died in 1944.

Brothers Leslie Raymond (Trooper; Service No:VX77231) and Henry Roy (Flying Officer; Service No:42866) also served in WWII.

Harold remarried in 1945 to Norma Clarice White (b1924) and they settled in Ballarat, Victoria where Harold worked as a Carpenter. Harold died in 1987.
