Trooper John Gould Kelly (Service No:291) served with 9th Light Horse Regiment in Egypt from 22 October 1914 to 15 November 1915. He had served with the Cadets and Militia (23rd Light Horse Regiment) before enlisting in the AIF. Trooper Kelly was at Gallipoli and the Dardanelles, where he was WiA and hospitalised in Heliopolis before RTA for medical Discharge. On his return to South Australia, the Kapunda Herald reported (Trove; December 1915) 'He went to the Dardanelles with the first battalions, and was wounded three times before being invalided home. He belonged to the famous Tenth, which lost 1,000, so he has seen stirring incidents. The soldier was given a rousing reception, and when invited to speak showed reluctance. However, he made a splendid entertaining address, brought about by inviting hearers to ask him questions on the campaign'.
John was born at Giles Corner, South Australia in 1895, fifth of nine children of John (JG) Kelly Snr (b1861 at One Tree Hill, Playford, South Australia) and Ada Caroline Pearce (b1869 in Kapunda, South Australia). JG was a Farmer/Grazier and Ada's father was Mayor of Kapunda and local MP. JG and Ada settled at Giles Corner where they raised their family and JG was a Farmer/Grazier. Ada died in 1901 and JG remarried on a further two occasions. JG was active in the local community - he sponsored the Giles Cricket Club, served as Councillor on the Stockport District Council, was a Trustee of the Tarlee Institute, President and Trustee of the Wooroora Agricultural Society and a Justice of the Peace.
John worked as a Farmer with his father before serving in WWI. In 1921 in Kent Town he married Maud (Queenie) Lillian Padman (b1895 in Middleton, South Australia). John and Queenie settled at Giles Corner where they raised their family and John was a Farmer/Grazier. Following Queenie's death in 1937, John remarried in 1940 to Rowena Mary Forss (b1895 at Henley Beach, South Australia) - Rowena was living in Giles Corner prior to her marriage. John died in 1960 and Rowena in 1971.
