Raymond was the fourth of six children of William Raymond Bilson (b1890 in Sheffield, Tasmania) and Lillian May Crole (b1894 in Warragul, Victoria). William - a Farmer - and Lillian married in 1915 at Warragul in Victoria and settled at Bairnsdale where they raised their family. William served in WWI (Private; Service No:5973) and was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous services, and in WWII he served with the Volunteer Defence Corps (Private; Service No:V365020). He and Lillian moved to Orbust, Gippsland, Victoria in 1928 where William was a Labourer.

In 1940 Raymond was living in Orbust, Gippsland, Victoria with wife Mavis Jean Treadwell (b1918 in Drouin, Victoria) - Raymond and Mavis married in 1938 in Drouin, Victoria. Raymond was working as a Farm Labourer when he enlisted with the ACMF in February 1942. He was attached to 13 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps (Private; Service No:V381068) when he was Discharged in September 1945. Brother Ronald Edwin (Private; Service No:V265275) and Brother-in-Law Ernest Peter Baker (Private; Service No:74162) also served in WWII.

Raymond and Mavis lived in Orbost - where Raymond was a Labourer - until the early 1950s when they relocated their family to Morwell, Victoria where Raymond was a Train Driver. He died in 1976 and Mavis in 2011.
