(Mother) Mrs. Helen Jane Buttfield, 152 Carr Street, West Perth, Western Australia. Served on Western Front. Died of wounds Armentieres, France, 31 May 1916, 8 Casualty Clearing Station, France aged 22. Buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Entered the line in France, 16 April 1916. He was shot at night at Armentieres, and died at Bailleul, France. "His CO wrote to his mother commending him on his devotion and fortitude in suppressing any cries that would betray the wiring party to the enemy." (details from brother).

Spencer Norman BUTTFIELD was born on 4th August, 1893 in Beltana, South Australia
His parents were Felix Montgomery BUTTFIELD and Helen Jane DOIG who married on 5th December, 1877 in Sliding Rock, SA
His brother Leslie Doig BUTTFIELD (SN 7684) served in WW1 and returned to Australia in 1919
Another brother Sidney Moir BUTTFIELD (SN 4840) served in WW1 and returned in 1919
