Roy was the eleventh of eighteen children of John Godfrey Johnson (b1848 in Bolivia, NSW) and Ellen Folwell (b1859 in Stawell, Victoria). John (a Labourer) and Ellen married in 1875 in Heathcote, Victoria and lived there and in NSW before moving thier family to WA by 1894. John worked initially as a Labourer in Perth before moving to Darkan by 1910 where he was a Farmer. According to family ancedote, John was born in Bolivia, South America - his parents were sponsored Assisted Immigrants fron England and arrived in NSW in 1841 on board the Brothers. They lived in Bolivia NSW before following the gold rushes to Victoria and then WA.
Roy worked as a Farm Hand at Mt Zion in Darkan, WA and served in the AIF in WWI in France (Private; Service No:7491) with 16th Infantry Battalion. He later served with the ACMF in WWII (Private; Service No:W84764) attached to 12 Battalion (Jarrah) VDC. Roy was one of eight brothers who served in WWI and/or WWII.
In 1920 in Darkan WA Roy married Clarice Elizabeth Marian Wild (b1895 in Moama, NSW) - Clarice came to Darkan, WA with her family in 1910. Roy and Clarice settled in Darkan WA, where Roy was a Farmer. By 1949 the couple were living at 'Glen Valley' in Gilingarra WA and had retired to York WA by 1958. When Roy died in 1968, he and Clarice were living in Perth WA. Clarice died in 1975.
