Jim was born in Mooroopna, Victoria in 1901, youngest of eight children of Michael Quill (b1848 in County Cork, Ireland) and Mary Mellon (b1862 in Woodstock, Victoria). Michael had arrived in Melbourne 1879 on board the Hankow, and he and Mary married in 1886 in Mooroopna, where they settled and raised their family. Michael worked as a Labourer, and was a Farmer, Dealer and Cattle Buyer when he died in 1902. Mary moved with her children to Western Australia, settling in the Arthur River region at Emu Swamp via Darkan.

Jim was a Farmer at Bokal, Darkan via Collie, and in 1936 in Guildford married Doris Ethel Jones (b1909 in Guildford, Western Australia) - Doris was a Bookbinder in Guildford.
