His older brother 218 Serjt. James McKenzie Anderson 5th Battalion AIF was still listed as officially missing later confirmed killed in action 26 April 1915, when Thomas died.

Thomas, a 22-year-old ironworker in civilian life, enlisted on 10 July 1915, also in 5th Battalion. He too arrived on the Gallipoli Peninsula but only in the last days of the campaign, and he went on later to the western front, landing at Marseilles on 30 March 1916. In April he was seconded to the Intelligence Platoon but remained with his battalion for duty. He was killed in action on 20 August 1916 in the battle for Mouquet Farm and is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
