My Great Grandfather
My Great Grandfather was born in Nystad Finland in 1890. He made his way to Australia arriving from Sweden 26-12-1912. He lived in many Gippsland towns and worked as a miner. He became an Australian citizen on 6th July, 1915 and enlisted on 2nd August, 1915 at Bendigo joining the 5th Battalion.
He was sent to Egypt and then onto the Western Front.
He was wounded a few times in France and hospitalized. Injuries I believe were from gun shots and gas. He was sent home to Australia on 28th March,1919 and discharged on 18th August 1919 due to injuries.
The gas had a major effect on his life after the war. He continued and worked on the waterside in Melbourne 1940.
He died 14th September, 1969, suffering for many years with Lung problems, that were put down to the gas during the war.
