Harold James Spry was born in Tungkillo in South Australia. At enlistment he was twenty years old, five foot and six inches, weighing one hundred and twenty four pounds, and his chest measurements were thirty one inches. He had a medium complexion, brown eyes, dark hair, and his religion was Methodist. His mother, Mrs Sarah Spry, was his nominated next of kin. Before the war, he worked as a Farm Labourer. He enlisted 23rd February 1916 and served with the 10th Infantry Battalion. 

After his discharge from military service in April 1919, Harold James Spry returned to civilian life in South Australia. In 1923, he married Lucy Ellen Mabel Lintern. He lived until 25 November 1973, passing away at the age of 77. His cremation took place on 28 November 1973 at Centennial Park Cemetery in Pasadena, South Australia. On the Virtual War Memorial, he is also listed under the Tungkillo Memorial Wall in South Australia.
