Son of Thomas James and Isabella Shiells. Brother of Walter Edward Shiells MC, MID who returned to Australia on 10 June 1919 having served with the 58th Battalion and Elsie May Sparkes nee Shiells of Foster, South Gippsland

Served in the senior cadets and a member of Foster Rifle Club and Welsh Pool Rifle Club
