Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

56 years ago today, on the 2nd March 1966, Private Edgar Roach, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-3453A), hairdresser from Broadmeadow Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 70. METHODIST 4-19. 40.

Born at Broadmeadow, New South Wales on the 19th June 1895 to William Thomas and Victoria Roach; husband of Grace Elizabeth Mary Roach nee Chapman (married 1926, Adamstown, N.S.W., died 1972, sleeping here), Edgar enlisted January 1917 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Older brother Harold (30th Battalion, Reg No-529, born 1893, Broadmeadow, N.S.W., died?) also served 1st A.I.F.

Edgar’s service record states no sickness or wounding's.

Edgar returned home September 1919, being discharged on the 12th October 1919.

Mr. Roach’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor (photo, unveiled date unknown, 619 names inscribed, 87 Fallen, proudly displayed at the Fort Scratchley Military Museum), Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Broadmeadow never produced a War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

Edgar’s headstone plaque proudly tells us of his service with the 53rd Battalion, 1st A.I.F., and I have placed poppies in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.

Lest We Forget.
