Private Peter Daniel Barby (Service No:V361973) served in the ACMF (PTD) from 7 November 1942 to 21 November 1945 with 14 Battalion (Vic) VDC. Son Harold also served in WWII.
Peter was born in Foxhow, Corangamite, Victoria in 1899, third of ten children of John (Jack) William Barby (b1863 in Inverleigh, Victoria) and Jane Dunn (b1877 at Leigh Creek, Moorabool, Victoria). Jack (a Labourer) and Jane married in 1893 in Foxhow, where they settled and raised their family and Jack was a Labourer. In 1920 Jack and Jane moved to Colac, where Jack was a Farmer when he died in 1921. Jane remarried in 1926 and settled in Melbourne.
Peter worked in Foxhow as a Labourer and in 1924 in Buangor married Alice Elizabeth Nairn (b1902 in Buangor, Victoria). Peter and Alice moved to Melbourne in 1925, where Peter worked as a Plasterer before moving to Middle Creek via Beafort by 1930. They lived at Middle Creek, where they raised their family and Peter was a Labourer for ten years. In 1940, eldest son Maxwell (then sixteen years of age) drowned in a dam on the Woodnaggerak Estate at Middle Creek. Peter and Alice moved back to Buangor with their family, and Peter worked as a Labourer. Following Alice's death in 1952, Peter settled in Ararat, where he worked as a Station Hand until his death in 1971.
