Sapper Ross of the 4th Field Company Engineers, was awarded the DCM for destroying enemy wire in front of the Vaire Wood.

William George Ross rank is called Sapper. The unit that he served in was 4th Field Company, Australian Engineers. The conflict he was involved in was the first World War, 1914 to 1918. 

William George Ross was born on the 11th, January in 1887, in Golden Grove, South Australia. He had seven siblings, in the Adelaide Hills. He married Esther Alexas Dreckow in 1919 in Riverton, SA, and had two sons who were Douglas Gerald Ross and Howard Monro Ross. William lived to the age of 93, and passed away in Horsham, Victoria. Which was in 1980, June of the 28th. Although before William George Ross enlisted he worked as a farmer in Kadina, South Australia before he enlisted in 1916. There was no actual record of William George Ross's education before his military service.

William had joined the British Army when he was at the age of 17 and he had served for 7 years. William was positioned in France as part of the Western Front campaign. His unit that he was involved with was attached to the 4th Division of the Australian Imperial Force. William is buried at Horsham Cemetery in Victoria, Australia. His grave is located in the CENTRAL 2-L-16 plot, near other returned servicemen. The award that William George Ross received was Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for bravery during a raid involving Bangalore torpedoes. He memorialized at the Victorian Garden of Remembrance in Springvale, Greater Dandenong City, Victoria, Australia. He took off on the 7th of October 1916 aboard HMAT Ceramic. 

William Geogre Ross returned to Australia and lived in Victoria. After surviving the war, he resumed civilian life as a farmer, potentially his work in Kadina, South Australia, before relocating to Horsham, Victoria, where he eventually passed away in 1980.
